Bataleon Snowboards 2011-2012

When you think of TBT, only one company comes to mind for standing out from the crowd and doing a shape that works.  Bataleon Snowboards patented TBT in 1998 and the concept has fully developed into a brand defined by the movement in a range of boards with variations for different riders.  And if you don’t believe them, they just tell you to try one because all it takes is one TBT board to get you to see the TBT way of riding.

TBT is flat between the bindings with angled side bases that are lifted with gradually increasing angles.  The uplift starts from flat in the binding area to a maximum increase at the widest point in the board. TBT comes in many options: jib, twin, freestyle, all mountain and freeride.

New for 11-12, Bataleon changed their nose and tail shapes with updated nose and tail ramps to a longer smoother uplift curve, the TBT has been taken further out all the way through the tip and tail bends to the ends of the board, all boards now have an extra kick or increased TBT after the effective edge giving a looser feeling board with more pow floating qualities without sacrificing edge hold.

Did the revamp all their flex ratings? Seems like higher number = softer now. (Which makes sense since it’s “Flex” instead of “Stiffness”

Also noticed that they have the funkink rated at a 8 now (which would be a 2 normally). Rode the 10-11 model (rated at a 3.5) and it seemed a lot stiffer than a 4.5 Skate Banana.

Wonder if the 11-12 is softer than the 10-11.

And when are brands going to get more consistent with their flex ratings?

A 3.5 Bataleon is stiffer than a 4.5 Skate Banana, difficult to judge

    Bataleon’s official 2012 Flex scale:

    0 – Unbendable mega stiff
    2 – Very stiff
    3 – Stiff but ridable
    4 – Agressive
    5 – Very responsive
    6 – good overall freestyle
    7 – playful
    8 – soft
    9 – very soft / noodly
    10 – wet towel

Note – We don’t do stiffness. We do flex. Our flex-rate is a scale from 0 to 10 where 0 is a super stiff board and 10 is a super noodly board. In the flexrating you’ll find three valuses, one for the nose-flex, one for the flex beteween the inserts and one for the tail-flex. So for example a 5-6-5 flex is a board with a medium flex that is slightly softer between the bindings.

Got that from a forum. Bataleon changed the way they rate their boards flex.

What sizes does the whatever come in?

Would love to know the waist widths if available!

I tried the Bataleon violenza and loved it. Usually I don’t ride directional boards, but this board was a ton of fun. I’ve been riding the Gnu B-pro this year and rode the Lib Tech TRS for the past 3 years. This board seems a lot lighter. Usually at demos I take it easy because I’m not comfortable riding a new board. As soon as I strapped this board on, I felt like I’ve owned it for years. I was able to charge the mountain, bounce around moguls, jump off rollers, duck into the woods and SPIN like the crazy. Super fast edge to edge transitions and really stable over all kinds of snow. I totally dig the TBT. I also tried the Feelbetter. The Feelbetter did infact feel better than the Burton Feelgood, but it reminded me more of the Lipstick. It was a lot slower and I could feel everything I rode over. It’s much more of a park board. I wouldn’t want to ride it the way I rode the violenza.
My friend rode the Enemy and he loved it. He normally rides Lib’s Dark Series.
The only thing that will keep me loyal to Lib and Gnu is Magne Traction, a must have on the eastcoast.
Still in all, I highly recommend these boards.

    Looking at the undisputed.
I’m 175cm (5.7 feet) and 85 kilos (187 pounds) and is wondering if I should go for the 163 or the 167. It will be used exclusively for offpiste powder and tree-runs. I am worried that a 167 might be a bit long (I sport 157 for park, currently this year’s ET). Boot size US 9.5 if it matters, but they’re Burton Ions and have a very small footprint.

    Tara,
I agree magne traction on the Icy East coast help so much…
So you found that TBT does not have good edge on icy too much?
Bataleon advertise that they are good?

  • Ivar
    April 11, 2011 at 1:27 pm

From my experience (I’ve gone through 2 Evil Twins in 3 seaons) the TBT sits better on ice than many other boards, and especially in the halfpipe you’ll appreciate the way it rides. For solid ice (and I mean bulletproof) you can’t really trust the edge like you can with a magnetraction board, but it still holds its own and Bataleon are definetely right by saying it holds up good. I’d take a TBT over a “regular” board, but mangetraction shines just a little bit more on those conditions. Still, you’ll love the TBT when you almost catch a toe-edge on a rail and feel how that Bataleon really just saved your ass. I’ve been on my toes a few times on a BS board and can absolutely say I love how I did not eat shit.

Hi, i’ve been riding bataleon for a couple years now and im thinking of getting the “whatever” this year. I was just wondering if i should get a 156 or the 159? I weigh about 120 lbs, boots size of a 10.5 and i like to ride powder trees (when i can find them) and jib around on the main runs of the mountain.

Hi, it will be my first Bataleon. I am beginner, 170 cm and 57 kg, and I really can`t decide, which one will be perfect – Violenza 145 or 149? or Distortia 147..? What do you think? Thx for help 🙂

  • Shay
    July 20, 2011 at 8:36 pm

Dean, go for the 156, even that’s on the bigger size for your weight but it’d make powder riding easier.

Ola, Sweet on your first Bataleon! It sounds like you’d be good for the Violenza and you could go either way on the size but lets hear more about your riding style and riding conditions to know for sure.

  • Ola
    July 21, 2011 at 7:53 am

Thx for fast answer 🙂 About my style – it`ll be my second season, so all mountain the most, and maybe i`m gonna try some freestyle this year. We will see 🙂

  • Ola
    July 22, 2011 at 2:08 am

Aha, and I still need a plank with very forgiving flex 🙂 So I`m afraid Violenza might be too stiff…

  • Shay
    July 22, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Ola, the Violenza is a 7 on their scale (1-10 stiff to soft) and it’s a more playful board, I think you’ll be fine on it.

  • Ola

Hey everybody 🙂 I´m women and I like more stiff thinks.. 🙂 Could you someone tell me about differences between women´s and men´s bataleon boards, because (without offence:)) Violenza is too soft for me…Is it possible (I know it is..) it will be comfortable for me to ride some smaller men´s board? I have 53 kg of weight and 170 cm of height…Pleaaaaase I need advise, big thanx to you 🙂 Peace

  • Shay
    August 5, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Ola, you could go either way for size. With the 149cm I think you’d have longer and it’d give you more stability overall for the mountain.

Lurda, women’s boards are softer in flex and narrower than their counterpoint men’s boards. Most models have a men’s version and a similar women’s version. What’s your boot size? You said you like stiff boards, are you mostly freeriding or do you ride park at all?

Hey, I just picked up the new Bataleon Feelbetter and Rome 390s, I cant wait to try them out down here in New Zealand at Snow Park. I have been riding the first Roxy Eminence BTX with Burton Escapade and look forward to feeling the difference. Thank you Shay for all the reviews and keeping up with the latest gear. Its been invaluable with all the options out there for riders.

    Cheers! 🙂

Gotta love all the research that goes into investing in a new board huh! I’m looking at a c2 btx with the magna trac because New Zealand is totally prone to ice at times but I’m sooo tempted by the distortia or violenza. Overseas I rode a 157 with lots of pop which was great in the soft stuff but I’m only 57kg and on a bad day the board owns me.. I’m definately all mt and enjoy playing around in the park from time to time so really interested in your feedback Lazzzy! Otherwise anyone else, suggestions for my upgrade welcome! I need some edge hold, good response (but still like to work for my turns) and something I can have a little fun with.

    August 10, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Hey, size of my boots is 38,5 EU (7,5-8 US) and I´m freerider also I would like to start with jumps and half pipe, I don´t ride park.. or seldom..

  • Shay
    August 12, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Lurda, you could ride men’s boards if you feel more comfortable with the flex but they’ll be wider than your boot size and more aggressive. I’d suggest a stiffer women’s freeride board since you don’t ride park.

    Hi,
have wavered between two measures of Goliath: 156 or 158???

I’m 163 lbs and my boots are 10.5
    Bindings: FLUX TT30

I would take the 156 beacuse i want more agility than speed.
    Is it good for me???

Hi, i`m a girl and i need a deck in about 147 size. Found bataleon airobic 147 w08/09 with a very low price (couldn`t find any wmn snbd so cheap), and my question is – could it be this deck good for a girl? My snbd boot size is 41 (about 26,5 cm inside), waist of airobic is 24,5 cm. To compare – waist of bataleon violenza 149 is 24,2 cm, so it seems like no big deference… What do U think? I can also take a fun.kink 145 w08/09 in tha same low price, but afraid it would be too short and unstable for me (I`m 170 cm height). Please for some advice 🙂

Forgot to say – i`m definitely beginner, after one season, need not too long and really soft board, and i know that i want bataleon 😉 next year (maybe this season) i wanna learn some freestyle things 🙂 bataleon catalogue wrote that airobic w08/09 has soft flex (i think about 3). So, is that board good enough for beginner girl? Thanks! 🙂

Ouu, and by the way – i`m looking for some flexible and very comfortable wmn bindings (AM/FS) for this bataleon. Could you recommend me some? Thought about some flux (GU30, GM30), but i`ve just read about them, never try, so i need some advice 🙂 Thx!

    August 25, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Dissolve, Yeah you could definitely do the Goliath 156cm, it’d be quicker.

Jagzazoo, The airobic is a softer jib board so will be easy to learn on and fine for your boot size (41=size 10 US). What’s your weight?

For bindings, Flux is a good place to start for bindings, very comfortable. I really like the RK30’s.

I rode the trs last year and the year but the Tbt has me going. I’ve been looking for a new board and bataleon is it. I am just stuck between the whatever and the Goliath. I rode a 154trs and it killed it all over the mountain. I am 6 foot and about 145 pounds. I am thinking about getting 153 but am a little worried about the float compared to the banana so maybe a 156. so I want an all mountain that mob trees, powder, huck cliffs, jib, fly high and be soft enough to butter around and get funky. Whatever or Goliath, or another option. Thanks : ) super stoked on yalls boards

Jag, that’s a tough call since I haven’t ridden any of those models to give you an idea on them.

Travis, awesome on a new deck. Have you ridden Bataleon TBT yet? The 156 would do you fine for all your riding. I haven’t tried the whatever yet but loved the goliath for an all mountain shred, whatever is supposed to dominate as well for whatever you throw at it. Are you able to try and demo a Bataleon?

Hi Shay, I’m thinking of purchasing the Bataleon Distortia 2011 but I don’t know whether I should get the 143 or 147? I’m in my 30s and I only started riding a couple of years ago and have never tried park but would like to on my next trip! I only found one weight chart given by a dealer (and not bataleon) which said the 143 would be most suitable for me (I’m 5’6″, 54kg and my boot size is a US 7) but I feel like this might be too small? I currently ride on a 149 and I’m still not hugely comfortable going down steep runs yet but am hoping to improve on the next trip! Unfortunately I don’t live on a continent where there’s snow so I can’t try out any boards! 🙁 Also, what do you think of gnu b-famous bindings? And Vans Veil boots? Any help will be much appreciated 😀

  • Shay
    September 22, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Ali, I wouldn’t listen to most charts on what sizes. I’d say you are fine with your 149cm size you are already on, it suits your weight and your riding style. Are you looking for a park board because the distortia is a park specific twin women’s board. If you plan to get into park on the board, the 147cm will be fine for you and not too small. I haven’t tried the GNU B-famous bindings but I have owned the Vans Veil’s for years and stand by their quality and durability…if they fit you. You’d want to make sure they fit you first.

MS, I haven’t tried the Fun Kink so don’t know first hand if the board can rip everywhere and kill it in the park. I’d suggest researching it and reviews to see your thoughts. Generally unless there are big changes, boards don’t change much year to year.

Jag, awesome on the new board! Congrats!

Hi there, I want to get a Bataleon board this year and someone advised me the Disaster. He said he had a lot of fun riding it and it was really playfull, and this is really what i’m looking for, but i’m wondering if it is not too soft for me. Could somebody give me advice? I’m not an advanced boarder, just a regular boarder who likes to have some fun on the slopes but i also still wan’t to make my turns and get some speed. I know the Disaster is great for fun but won’t it lack on downhill boarding and curving? Please let me know and maybe you think an other Bataleon board is better fot me.

    Hey Shay,
Wonder if you can help me out, im getting very confused at to what flux bindings to buy. I have a 151 Signal Vita park Rocker this is my first board. I started riding about two seasons ago and totally love it!! I would say i love carving down the slope (on powder when ever we get it however im mostly on piste or indoor artifical snow :o( ) I do like to butter about and try some small kickers. I would love to progress to 180’s and rails eventually however the majority of my time would probably be spend seeking out some lovely powder :o)
I am torn between the Flux GM30’s and the GU15’s there arent many reviews on just now and im getting some conflicting information. The GM30 is sold as an all mountain that can also handle park and the GU15 is sold as a park binding. I have been told that although the GU15 is soft it isnt actually that soft and the GM30 is quite stiff hence the reason why a lot of women are shying away from the GM30’s. What would you suggest? :o)

  • Shay
    October 30, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Frank, I haven’t ridden the disaster yet to compare flex for you but i would suggest demo’ing boards if you are able to, then you’ll know if the board works for you.

Victoria, sweet on the new setup! Depends how you like your binding flex, softer flex would be more suitable to your softer board but sometimes if you want more response from a stiffer binding, then people will go that way.

hey Shey, i have been looking for a new board this season and have been directed towards a bataleon i was looking for a board more suited towards powder, tree runs chutes as well as carving and playing around on kickers n buttering etc on normal mountain runs, not so much park. im 168cm and roughly 67kg. i got told the Goliath 158 would be perfect for me, but after reading the info on the boards i’m not so sure. am i being steered in the wrong direction? if so what would be more suited to my needs?

Andy, Goliath might work it’s more all mountain freestyle focus. Definitely TBT helps for carving. My question is if you want a powder/tree run board, are you wanting a stiffer flex or do you want a softer flexing board? Why are you thinking the Goliath won’t work for you? What’s your boot size?

  • andy
    November 14, 2011 at 9:44 pm

ok cool will it still be a good powder board? thats my main concern,my other board is a 155 and it just dies in the deeper powder its alot of work. mid stiffness is good i think so i get the best of both worlds, i still want to be able to play around on the mountain just along as it floats in powder, my main reason i thought it might not be the best option is because of the write up it says its a freestyle board more suited to park etc. my boot size is 8 u.s
    thanks for your help Shay

    Hi Shay

Thinking of investing in a Bataleon this year and would appreciate any recommendation. Have been riding on and off since 2002, first on a Ride Vista (150) and Ride bindings (my beginner set-up) and the last 2 seasons on a K2 Airdu (148) with K2 Bliss bindings. I live in Japan and ride mostly powder, trees, piste, not really into the park although have fun on the smaller kickers. I like the Airdu’s speed on the piste although I feel like it loses stability on ice and its not good in deep powder. That’s probably the length though – I’m 5’2″ and 54kgs, euro 37/38 feet. Any recommendations for a new set-up? I was wondering how the TBT would feel after riding flatline? More forgiving? Cheers!

Andy, it’s a all mtn freestyle so if you want a powder board, then go for a powder board.

Wren, TBT will get you on edge quicker and carving easier than flatline. You could check out the Violenza as an option.

Sergio, compare the specs for waist width on your alibi to the goliath.

    Hi guys
I am about to purchase my first Bataleon snow board after riding a friends last year, but unsure what bindings would be the best for the Evil twin 157 i ride powder some park.
Could you please advise? I’m looking at the Burton Malavita but just wondered if you had any other ideas.

    Regards

    Paul
