The mountain is your best friend and your worst enemy, it can make you happy but it can also make you sad. Steamboat was hit hard with the news of a death on the mountain today, it’s sad that something we love doing can end lives so quickly.

I wasn’t planning to ride the mountain today but ended up going out so I could make laps with a fellow sierrasnowboard member who was visiting in town, hokierower aka Ross and his friend Andrew. We met at gondola Joe’s in the base area and headed up the gondola to check out the conditions. Today was silent on the mountain, low visibility and snow falling.

The guys had already checked out most of the mountain but hadn’t gone to the Pony area yet. It’s one of my favorites but also the last to get good snow and coverage, luckily I had heard it was very good recently and we ended up finding some good powder spots just off the runs.

At the end of the day when I headed back to work, I snapped a shot of Ross with his Sierra Crew snowboard.

In a couple weeks the sierra crew will be coming to Steamboat for a sierra meet up called Bruizzapalooza and it’s going to be a blast! I’m looking forward to meeting some of the members and shredding it up on the mountain with the crew.

January 7, 2010 at 1:22 pmThanks for taking us out Shay. We had a blast on the Pony side and the snow and zero visibility made it that much better. Thanks for the tips and hopefully I’ll be able to make it out for the sierra gathering next year.
