Each day riders and skiers hit the slopes and each day an injury is possible, it’s just part of the lifestyle whether it’s in the terrain park or just learning how to snowboard. Unfortunately today not everyone has insurance and an injury can lead to a hospital visit which can lead to bills that you’ll be taking years to pay off.
That’s where Xtreme Sports Insurance comes in, it won’t replace medical insurance but it’ll help out if your uncovered as accident insurance and snowboarding injuries are accidents. The plans start at $17 a month. There are plenty of snowboarders out there, whether it’s part time resort employees or upcoming riders that aren’t covered and this can certainly help out. The way the plan works is if you beak your arm you’ll get x amount of dollars for xray, cast, office visit, and that’s just one case.

To find out more about the Xtreme Sports Insurance, I got in touch with them to get some question answered and see how beneficial this is for snowboarders. They also run a blog that answers a lot of questions.
Shay: Does XSI cover snowboard injuries?
XSI: Yes, as long as they are not injured during a cash prize event. Meaning the injured party is being paid cash prizes to compete during the event he/she is injured in. We can offer that kind of coverage, but the base XSI plan excludes paid events.
Shay: What type of insurance does XSI offer riders?
XSI: Accident and injury insurance, mainly. Think Aflac but way cheaper and better benefits. But we also carry major medical, dental, life, and event insurance.
Shay: How does it work?
XSI: XSI partners with Conseco Insurance Company. Instead of paying your doctors, Conseco Insurance pays you! After you get injured you receive a check in the mail—regardless of your other health insurance or lack thereof. Even if you have other health insurance, Conseco gets a check in your hand to help with lost time at work, bills your insurance doesn’t cover, or for anything you want.
Shay: What happens if someone gets injured a lot, is there a cut off?
XSI: No cut off! you can use it as many times as you need it.
Shay: What if someone takes a trip to the ER, how much would XSI cover?
XSI: It depends on the injury all “normal” injuries such as broken legs, a cut head requires stitches are usually covered 100%. In the event of something major like a shattered hip, portion will be covered but it’s still better than nothing at all.
Shay: Who would benefit from this insurance?
XSI: Anybody who is active! We cover nearly every sport from snowboarding to Soccer. XSI can be used by itself or in addition to you existing coverage. When used as a supplement to your existing major medical it will cover co-pays and deductibles. Also the base level of XSI carries a $50,000 life insurance in the event of death that will be paid to family members.
There are many more questions and answers in the XSI FAQ section which cover how the reimbursement works for injuries.
This is just one option to consider, there are others out there but this helps if you don’t have insurance and need some kind of coverage for your days out enjoying the snow.

July 26, 2009 at 9:17 amGood stuff, I now a lot of riders who could use this. When I played ice hockey I always had insurance from USAHockey and it was a big help. I’m glad people find it’s equally important for extreme sports.
